What is a Travel Agent (or Advisor) and what do they do? There are many answers to these questions and I’ll try to address them here.

First and foremost, it takes an average of 10-20 hours to plan a vacation! Now, try to do that on top of your usual 40+ hours job, family, school and life. Because it is a Travel Advisor’s job to do just that, think about how much time it frees up for your life. Even if you “enjoy” the research, you still don’t have the “insider’s view” of the industry.

Here are some misconceptions about Travel Advisors.

I Can’t Control My Vacation Details

This is simply not true. It really depends on how involved the client wants to be. We can do as little or as much as the client wishes. Our services are customized to our client – it’s not a one size fits all deal.

I Can’t Get the Best Discount

Travel Advisors have access to the same discounts and can quickly compare prices from multiple suppliers to find the best deal. We also have access to Travel Advisor only sites.

I Can’t Take Part in the Planning Process

Clients can definitely be involved in their vacation planning. We love when the client is knowledgeable about their destination. It makes the planning much more fun!

It Costs Extra to Use a Travel Advisor

There is no cost to use a Travel Advisor. When clients book their own travel, they may already be paying a fee. Did you know suppliers include a hidden fee in their prices for the use of a travel Advisor, whether you use one or not?

There is No Benefit to Using a Travel Advisor

This is a myth! We are a single point of contact for all their travel needs, providing personal planning for each family and taking the stress out of it! And there are many benefits!

Now that you know why to use a Travel Advisor here are a few tips:

  • Before you call an agent, have an idea of what you want to spend and do a quick price check to know if your budget is feasible. If you give an agent a budget of $1000/person with a specific destination then know that this might not be possible if the average flight for that destination is $800/person.

  • The more information you give an advisor the easier it is for them to get you the pricing and destination you prefer. If I know the destination you want, if your dates are flexible, and state your preferred budget, your Travel Advisor can do a better job of getting you exactly what you’re looking for. Travel Advisors know what resorts/tour operators are running specials and if they offer discounted air which may only fly out of specific airports on specific days.
